Understanding your result

This estimate starts from body weight and adds allowances for exercise and hot/humid weather.

It's general guidance — thirst, sweat, and individual needs vary. Anyone with a kidney, heart, or fluid-restriction condition should get a personalized target from their doctor.

Where the eight-glasses rule came from

Heinz Valtin, a kidney physiologist, went looking for the evidence behind "drink at least eight glasses of water a day" and published what he found — or rather, did not find — in the American Journal of Physiology.2 There is no study behind it. The most plausible origin he traced is a 1945 U.S. Food and Nutrition Board recommendation of about 2.5 litres of water a day, which included the sentence, usually dropped in retelling, that most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods.

That omission is the whole story. A recommendation for total water intake became a recommendation for drinking water, roughly doubling the apparent requirement, and it has been repeated ever since.

What actually changes your requirement

  • Sweat rate. By far the biggest factor, and hugely variable — from under 0.5 L/hour to over 2 L/hour depending on the person, the intensity and the heat.3
  • Climate. Heat and humidity raise it. Dry cold does too, less obviously, through respiratory water loss.
  • Altitude. Higher breathing rate and drier air both increase losses.
  • Body size. Larger bodies produce more metabolic heat and need more fluid to dissipate it.
  • Diet. High protein and high sodium intakes raise renal water needs. High fruit and vegetable intake supplies more water directly.
  • Illness. Fever, vomiting and diarrhoea can all change requirements dramatically and quickly.

Coffee and tea count

The mild diuretic effect of caffeine does not offset the fluid in the drink. Habitual consumers develop tolerance to it, and the net contribution of a cup of coffee to your fluid balance is positive. So does milk, juice, and the water in soup, fruit and vegetables.

Judging it without counting

For a healthy adult with free access to fluid, thirst is a well-regulated signal. Two cross-checks are more useful than a target.

You can drink too much

Exercise-associated hyponatraemia happens when fluid intake dilutes blood sodium, and it is dangerous. In a study of 488 Boston Marathon runners, 13% finished with hyponatraemia, and the strongest predictor was substantial weight gain during the race — that is, drinking more than they lost.4 During long endurance events, drink to thirst rather than to a schedule, and include sodium.

Around exercise

The ACSM's position is that the aim is to limit dehydration to less than about 2% of bodyweight, and to avoid gaining weight from overdrinking.3 The practical method is simple and personal.

  1. Weigh yourself before and after a typical session, unclothed and towelled dry. Each kilogram lost is roughly a litre of sweat.
  2. Replace about 1.25–1.5 L per kilogram lost over the following hours — some of the fluid is excreted rather than retained.
  3. Include sodium for sessions over an hour, in heat, or if you are a salty sweater (white marks on clothing). Plain water alone in high volume is what drives hyponatraemia.
  4. Drink to thirst during the session. The schedule-based advice of the 1990s has been superseded, and thirst outperforms it for all but elite competitors in extreme conditions.

Used when there is not enough evidence to set an RDA. It reflects the observed intake of healthy populations rather than a measured requirement — which is exactly why the water figures should not be read as a target to hit.
Total water
All water consumed: drinking water, other beverages, and the water contained in food. Around 20% of the total typically comes from food.
Hyponatraemia
Blood sodium diluted below the normal range. In sport it is caused by drinking more fluid than is lost, and it can be fatal.
Euhydration
Normal body water content — the state thirst is regulating you toward. Neither dehydrated nor overhydrated.
