What Is My Body Shape? How to Measure, and What It Does Not Mean
Hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle — where the categories come from, how to take the three measurements properly, and which of your numbers actually predicts anything.
Where these categories actually come from
Not from medicine. The five shapes in common use descend from the Female Figure Identification Technique, developed at North Carolina State University to classify body scans so clothing could be sized to real bodies rather than to a single idealised block.
That origin explains a great deal about how the vocabulary behaves. It was built to answer will this garment fit, and it answers that well. It was never built to say anything about health, and the fact that "apple" and "pear" now appear routinely in health writing is a borrowing rather than a finding.
The technique compares circumferences and applies fixed thresholds in inches: a 3.6-inch difference between bust and hips separates a balanced silhouette from a top- or bottom-heavy one, and a drop of 9 inches from the bust or 10 from the hips defines a marked waist. The five shapes, and what separates them
All five are defined by relationships between three numbers, not by any of the numbers alone. Two people of very different sizes can share a shape, and two people of identical weight can have different ones.
- Hourglass — bust and hips within 3.6 inches of each other, with a clearly narrower waist between them.
- Triangle (pear) — hips exceed the bust by 3.6 inches or more, so width sits below the waist.
- Inverted triangle — bust or shoulders exceed the hips by 3.6 inches or more.
- Rectangle (straight) — bust and hips close together, without a marked waist.
- Oval (apple) — the waist is the widest of the three.
How to measure so the answer means anything
The shape boundaries are only a few centimetres apart, which makes technique matter more here than on most measurements. Two people measuring the same body differently can land in different categories, and the same person can move between them week to week on measurement error alone.
- Bust or chest — around the fullest point, tape level all the way round, arms relaxed at your sides rather than raised.
- Waist — at the narrowest point, usually just above the navel. Measure at the end of a normal breath out, not while holding it in.
- Hips — at the widest point around the buttocks, feet together.
- Tape tension — snug enough to stay put, loose enough not to indent the skin. If it leaves a mark, it was too tight.
- Consistency — first thing in the morning, over minimal clothing, the same way each time.
The measurement that does predict something
Shape carries no health signal. Two of the three measurements behind it do, and it is worth being precise about which.
Waist-to-hip ratio describes where fat is stored, and where fat is stored predicts cardiovascular and metabolic risk better than how much of it there is. The EPIC study followed more than 350,000 adults across Europe and found waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio associated with mortality risk within every BMI category — two people at the same height and weight faced measurably different risk depending on distribution.
The World Health Organization treats a ratio at or above 0.85 in women and 0.90 in men as substantially raised. The Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator reports yours against those thresholds, and the Body Fat Calculator answers the related but separate question of how much fat there is rather than where.
The mechanism is visceral fat — the fat stored around the abdominal organs rather than under the skin. It is metabolically active in a way subcutaneous fat is not, and a tape measure around the waist detects it far better than a scale does.
Can you change your shape?
Mostly not, and the honest version of that answer is more useful than the marketable one.
Shape is driven by skeletal proportions — shoulder width, ribcage, pelvis — and by where your body preferentially deposits fat. Genome-wide association studies have identified many loci linked to fat distribution independently of overall adiposity, and several act differently in men and women. You inherited the pattern.
In practice that means losing weight usually makes the same shape smaller rather than converting it into a different one. Fat comes off roughly in the proportions your body already favours, and spot reduction through targeted exercise does not work — an abdominal exercise builds abdominal muscle, and the fat above it responds to overall energy balance like every other fat store.
What you can change is body composition and waist circumference. Since waist circumference is the part carrying the health signal, that happens to be the useful target anyway.
Why the language deserves some suspicion
"Apple" and "pear" turn up constantly in health marketing, and they are almost always attached to something for sale — a shape-specific diet, a shape-specific training plan, a supplement for one body type.
The underlying observation is real and well evidenced: abdominal fat carries more cardiometabolic risk than fat on the hips and thighs. The leap from there to a body-shape-specific protocol is not. No trial has shown that people classified as one shape respond differently to a given diet or training programme than people classified as another.
There is also a distinct piece of pseudoscience wearing similar clothes. Somatotypes — ectomorph, mesomorph, endomorph — come from William Sheldon's mid-century work, which claimed to link body build to personality and criminality, and which has been thoroughly discredited. The terms survive in fitness marketing; the science behind them does not, and they are unrelated to the circumference-based shapes here.
What to take from your result
A shape category is a description of proportions, useful for buying clothes that fit and for recognising your own build. It is not a diagnosis, not a ranking, and not a target.
The three ratios reported beside it are the substantive part, and the waist-to-hip ratio is the one to act on. If it is raised, that is a reason to look at waist circumference over time — not a reason to attempt to become a different shape.
